Cybersecurity & IT for Research

Cybersecurity encompasses all activities aimed at protecting computers, networks, and data from unauthorized access and cyberattacks. We ensure the security of the University’s centralized systems and services, collaborating with the CISO, RTD, and DPO to protect personal data, prevent threats, and maintain operational continuity.

Although Scientific Research and Technological Innovation primarily take place within the Departments, the University provides centralized support through specialized IT services to assist research activities and researchers. We promote an innovative and proactive approach, leveraging advanced technologies for research, digital transformation, innovation, and compliance.

Through the continuous review of solutions and development models, we aim to constantly improve our technological ecosystem, exploring new strategic opportunities for a secure and sustainable digital transformation.

The Staff

  • We design and manage solutions to protect the University’s applications, databases, and network. Our goal is to prevent cyberattacks by detecting and blocking threats before they cause damage.
  • In addition to design, we perform daily system monitoring and respond promptly to any issues.
  • We provide support and advice on cybersecurity matters, helping to identify simple and appropriate solutions.
  • We manage network access and system administrator logs.
  • We offer technical guidance for implementing security and privacy policies, in collaboration with the DPO.
  • At the CISO’s request, we also conduct preventive checks to protect systems and detect any anomalies or illicit activities.

  • We manage the University’s scientific computing infrastructures, such as the HPC@PoliTO system, designed for those who require high computational power. 
  • We manage Cloud@PoliTO, the University’s cloud infrastructure dedicated to research. We use technologies such as OpenStack and Kubernetes to offer flexible solutions, including virtual datacenters, virtual machines, and container systems.
  • We also manage ITBox, the storage infrastructure dedicated to research. We offer on-demand data storage services, such as virtual NAS, as well as solutions to support Open Science and ongoing research projects.

  • Research support is provided through computing and storage tools made available to departments, in a complementary and coordinated manner with local solutions.
    • Special focus on High Performance Computing, Big Data & Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and private clouds based on technologies such as OpenStack and Kubernetes.
  • Ongoing activities include the consolidation and improvement of datacenters and departmental technical rooms.
    • Policies are defined for hosting systems from other structures, both virtualized and physical.
    • Consultancy is offered for the proper sizing of new technical rooms at different locations.
  • Infrastructure service allocation strategies aim to balance on-premise and cloud solutions, developing hybrid environments.
    • Goals: flexibility, security, sustainability, and confidentiality, including backup systems and operational continuity.
  • Promotion of sustainable, low-energy infrastructures, such as Green Data Centers.
    • Adoption of virtualized solutions to reduce system obsolescence.
    • Encouragement of experimental initiatives within departments with an innovative and environmentally responsible approach.
  • Active participation in national and European research initiatives, such as GARR Cloud and the European Open Science Cloud.
    • Continuous dialogue with GARR for the development of new services.
    • Encouragement of open-source software usage, native electronic document management, and support for Open Science activities, centers of excellence, and research laboratories.
